December was an engaging and meaningful month for student life as students wrapped up the semester through leadership opportunities, community events, and activities that supported social and emotional growth.
Student Leadership Through Heroes Council
The Heroes Council held its final meeting of the semester with a small celebration, complete with cupcakes and sparkling cider. Throughout the semester, this group of vocal and engaged students played a central role in shaping student life by making community decisions, including planning seasonal initiatives such as the school Halloween costume theme and leading the Winter Talent Show. Through these leadership experiences, students practiced collaboration, responsibility, communication, and pro-social skills in real time.
Hip Hop Dance Class
This semester, students also participated in a Hip Hop dance class offered at Academics West. The class was taught by Greenhouse Arts Center, a Harlem-based dance company, and took place in the middle school auditorium. Students worked hard throughout the program to practice a hip hop dance routine, building confidence, focus, and teamwork. Their dedication came together when they performed the routine at the Winter Talent Show, proudly showcasing their effort and growth in front of the school community.
Winter Talent Show
One of the highlights of the month was the Winter Talent Show, which was led by the Heroes Council. Fifteen students signed up to participate, showcasing their talents in a supportive and inclusive environment. Events like the talent show give students the opportunity to build confidence, practice public speaking, and celebrate personal strengths, all while strengthening social and emotional skills within the school community.
Winter Spirit Week and School Community
Winter Spirit Week brought extra energy and connection to the school community. Theme days such as Silly Sock Day, Pajama Day, “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink,” Color Wars, and Ugly Sweater Day encouraged students across cohorts to engage, have fun, and strengthen peer relationships in a low-pressure and inclusive way.
Positive Reinforcement and the Kudos Board
Students officially filled the Kudos Board by recognizing peers for positive behavior, effort, and kindness. As a reward, students earned a school-wide pizza party, celebrating their commitment to positive reinforcement, accountability, and mutual respect. These values help create a supportive and respectful environment for students.
Community Service and Social Responsibility
Giving back was another focus of the month. The Heroes Council organized a community service initiative in which students created no-sew pet beds for a local animal shelter. This hands-on volunteer project fostered empathy, teamwork, and social responsibility, providing students with a meaningful way to contribute beyond the classroom.
Bullying Awareness Week
During Bullying Awareness Week, our middle school students created anti-bullying campaign signs that were displayed in their classrooms. These student-led messages encouraged kindness, inclusion, and self-advocacy, promoting important conversations about social dynamics and emotional safety within the school environment.
Supporting Student Well-Being
Looking ahead, students are excited for an upcoming therapy dog visit with Hank on January 12. Therapy dog visits support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and promote well-being, an important part of the supportive structure at Academics West. December was a strong close to the semester, highlighting how student life at Academics West supports academic growth, social-emotional development, and a connected, inclusive school community for students.
