Last week, Academics West proudly celebrated its Lower School students with a heartfelt Moving Up ceremony. Held at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre, the event marked the close of a meaningful school year and highlighted the growth, connection, and accomplishments of every student in the Lower School community.
A Morning of Reflection and Celebration
AW Co-founder, Dr. Evan Flamenbaum, opened the ceremony by welcoming families, faculty, and students. He encouraged everyone to pause and reflect on how far each student had come since the first day of school. His thoughtful message set the tone for a morning centered on growth, resilience, and the power of community.
Next, Clinical Coordinator Dr. Marissa Diaco delivered an inspiring message that reimagined the Lower School journey as a hero’s training ground. She described courage not in capes, but in noise-canceling headphones and small, everyday acts of bravery—like asking for a break, owning a mistake, or forgiving a friend.
“These aren’t powers granted by lightning bolts or magic wands. They’re powers built slowly—with effort, with mistakes, with courage.”
Dr. Marissa Diaco, Clinical Coordinator
Her words beautifully captured the heart of the Academics West philosophy: resilience is learned, supported, and practiced in community.
Celebrating a Year to Remember
Following the opening remarks, Student Life Coordinator Kiera Mullany presented a special year-in-review video montage. The video captured standout moments from field trips, talent shows, and visits from AW’s beloved therapy dog, Koa. This year, for the first time, AW also debuted its official yearbook, offering families a chance to revisit the most memorable highlights of the school year.
Recognizing Student Strengths
As the ceremony continued, Lower School teachers Jane, Kate, and Colleen took the stage to present a range of student awards. These recognitions reflected both academic and personal growth. Awards such as Exceptional Effort, Reading Rockstar, Kindest Friend, Most Patient, and Animal Activist celebrated not only hard work and creativity but also compassion, perseverance, and individuality.
Mentorship, Leadership, and Heroism
One especially heartwarming moment came when a senior mentor made a surprise appearance to present the Mentee of the Year Award to her Lower School mentee. Her recognition highlighted the meaningful bond they built throughout the year as part of AW’s mentorship program.
Additionally, a student received the 2025 City Council Citation, an award presented to those who demonstrate academic excellence, kindness, and leadership within the community. Later, the 2025 Hero Award was presented to another student in recognition of his courage, compassion, and ability to stay true to himself through both big and small challenges.
Looking Ahead With Pride
Assistant Head of School, Thea Cruz, closed the ceremony with heartfelt remarks. She reminded students of how much they had grown and encouraged them to feel proud of their progress. “Each of you have grown so much this year,” she said. “But the end of one thing means something else is just getting started.”
Before the audience could leave, the celebration ended on a joyful note. A Lower School student and his teacher, Ms. Amy, took the stage for a surprise performance of AW’s first-ever school theme song. The playful lyrics and spirited delivery left the audience smiling and clapping along.
A Celebration of What Makes AW Special
From start to finish, the Lower School’s 2025 Community Day showcased what makes Academics West unique. It’s a place where students are seen, supported, and celebrated for who they are and who they’re becoming.
