Preventing the Summer Slide: How to Keep Kids Learning All Summer

Central Park - Academics West

Have you ever heard of the “summer slide”? Unfortunately, we’re not talking about the fun kind of slide you’ll find at a playground. This particular slide refers to the learning loss that occurs when school is out for summer. Preventing the summer slide is crucial for maintaining your child’s academic progress.

During the summer months, the average student loses one to three months of learning, including declines in reading ability and other academic skills. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this normal summer slide, and math and reading scores are now at historic lows.

How to Prevent Academic Regression

The secret to preventing the summer slide is to keep learning all summer long—but that doesn’t necessarily mean summer school. Learning opportunities throughout the summer can indeed prevent your child from experiencing the summer slide. Here are a few recommendations:

1. Encourage Reading

Have your child read at least 20 minutes a day—this simple habit can prevent summer learning loss. Studies show that access to books has a more powerful impact on education than household income, making the library an essential resource (Scholastic). Take your child to your local library and let them pick out books they enjoy. They’re more likely to read when they’re interested in the topic, which is key in preventing the summer slide!

2. Go Outside

Find inexpensive, hands-on learning experiences like gardening, hiking, or trying a new sport. Exploring the outdoors reinforces learning naturally while also keeping kids active. Many communities offer free summer programs—check online or visit your local library for opportunities that can help in preventing the summer slide. 3. Play Smart

Games and puzzles are a great way to strengthen academic skills while having fun. Many games focus on math, spelling, and vocabulary, allowing kids to learn without even realizing it. Board games, word puzzles, and educational apps can all contribute to preventing the summer slide.

4. Spend Time Cooking Together

Nutrition plays a crucial role in learning. Studies show that a healthy diet improves memory, concentration, and energy levels, while poor nutrition can make learning more difficult (Mayo Clinic). Cooking together is a great way to bond as a family while also teaching kids about preventing the summer slide, healthy eating, math (through measuring ingredients), and following directions.

By incorporating these simple strategies into your summer plans, you can help prevent the summer slide and set your child up for success in the next school year.
